Making the decision to leave a job can be a tough choice, especially if you’re feeling torn between the parts of your job you love and the growing sense that something just isn’t right anymore.
You’ve probably heard people say things like, “Trust your gut,” or “You’ll know when it’s time.”
But how do you really know? It’s not always black and white, and sometimes the signs can be subtle until you look back and realize the pattern.
In this post, I’ll share 3 signs that helped me know it was time to quit my job—signs that you might recognize in yourself if you’re in a similar position. Let’s dive in!
Sign #1: The Sunday Scaries Are Real
I had heard the term "Sunday Scaries" before, but it wasn’t until I experienced them myself that I realized how intense they could be. If you’re dreading Monday morning every single week, something is off.
I used to start every Saturday with excitement for the weekend, but by Sunday afternoon, I’d feel this heavy weight of dread settle in. The weekend was ending, and the thought of facing another week at work made my stomach turn.
It wasn’t just about the tasks at hand; it was the overall feeling of being trapped in a cycle that wasn’t fulfilling.
If you're finding yourself counting down the hours until the weekend every week, and feeling that sense of dread before the week even begins, it could be a sign that your job is no longer serving you.
What to Do:
Start paying attention to how you feel about the workweek ahead. Are you excited for what’s to come, or are you just trying to survive until Friday? Recognizing this feeling is the first step toward understanding if you need a change.
Sign #2: Uncharacteristic Behaviors
Have you noticed yourself acting in ways that just don’t feel like you? Maybe you're snapping at loved ones over minor things, or feeling unusually short-tempered or withdrawn.
These subtle but uncharacteristic shifts in behavior can be a major indicator that something’s not right.
I know from experience. I started uncharacteristically crying in my car on the way home, and would be angry about decisions made at work—days after the incident had passed.
When your work stress or dissatisfaction starts bleeding into your personal life and impacting how you show up, it’s a signal that something bigger needs attention.
What to Do:
Pay close attention to how you’re interacting with the people and situations in your life. Are you noticing patterns of frustration, withdrawal, or overreacting? Recognizing these behaviors is the first step to addressing the root cause—and finding your way back to your authentic self.
Sign #3: Work Is All-Consuming
When your job starts taking over every aspect of your life, it's hard to ignore the impact. I used to spend my evenings checking emails and thinking about work goals. My thoughts would be consumed by bonus targets, meetings, and upcoming deadlines.
Here’s the kicker—I didn’t even know how to answer when someone asked me what I did for fun. My life was all work.
If you can’t remember the last time you made time for yourself or enjoyed something outside of work, it might be time to assess how your job is affecting your well-being.
What to Do:
Start taking inventory of how much mental and emotional space your job occupies. Are you able to step away, or is your work-life balance completely out of whack? Pay attention to whether your job is leaving room for personal time, hobbies, or simply rest.
So, What’s the Next Step?
If you’re noticing any of these signs in your own life, it may be time to make a change. It’s easy to settle for the comfort of the familiar, especially when the job offers benefits, a good paycheck, or even a flexible schedule.
But here’s the truth: When your job no longer aligns with your values or is taking more than it gives, it’s time to explore what else is out there.
This doesn't mean jumping out of your job without a plan, but it does mean taking the time to evaluate what’s really serving you. Trust yourself. Listen to your gut. If you feel that your job is no longer in alignment with who you are or who you’re becoming, that’s your clue that it might be time to make a change.
I’ve been there. I’ve walked away from jobs that weren’t serving me anymore, and I’ve stepped into new roles that aligned with my purpose. And, yes, I know that leaving behind stability can be scary, but let me tell you—it’s worth it. You deserve to feel fulfilled in your work and in your life.
